Charlie Hunter with Derrek Phillips at the newly-reopened Legion Arts CSPS. One of the first shows after a massive year-long renovation of the historic CSPS venue in Cedar Rapids, IA. A great turnout for a Wednesday-night show. The very appreciative audience seemed to really spur on Hunter and Phillips who were lively, funny and entertaining.
Some show notes:
On the first track, you hear Mel Andringa of Legion Arts (http://www.legionarts.org the organization that runs CSPS) mention that he wants to draw the shades. One of the many upgrades the place got were remote-controlled automatic window shades and he activated them before the show started. That is the "ooooh" and applause you hear before he announces the band.
At the end of the second set you can hear Charlie talking with someone in the audience about the song "Liza" and about Thelonious Monk. That person is local jazz DJ and sometime record store owner Craig Kessler from KCCK in Cedar Rapids.
If anyone can correct or identify tracks in this set, I welcome the updates.
